Freelance Teacher

Using knowledge and skills for teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at ICPNA I began to deliver classes to students who were unable to attend formal classes. Classes were held at their place of employment according to their schedule. I developed a curriculum for teaching basic English to students as I learned to further navigate the city of Lima using only public transportation.

Importance:

This position was important because I gained experience with:

  • The delivery of classes with minimal materials relying on my knowledge to create a syllabus

  • The M.Ed. Program Competency of Cultural Responsiveness as I kept track of each student and their respective workplace/schedule and constantly communicated with them to coordinate class sessions.

  • Balancing freelance classes alongside a formal teaching position at Wall Street English gave me experience managing 2 sources of classes.

Skills Gained:

  • Deeper understanding of basic English grammars and increased ability to invent examples to explain grammar points.

  • Skills maneuvering 2 professional teaching careers throughout Lima, requiring me to maintain communication with all stake holders.

  • Ability to communicate with students to tailer classes to suit their individual needs.

Impact:

The independence and freedom of teaching classes without following an institution-created syllabus and pedagogy gave me the unique experience of allowing me to experiment with different teaching methods to hone my own personal teaching style. Being independent also taught me to master even further the material being taught, especially by creating my own examples – along with images – to support each concept.
