I was an enlisted member of the Air Force for 6 years working as a network infrastructure and security technician for the Air Education Training Command (AETC), which was comprised of 13 Air Force bases. I learned several network administration tools to remotely maintain the security of local and distant network devices, such as computers, servers, routers, and firewalls to maintain a high degree of security on sensitive equipment. This experience was valuable in that it trained me to maintain current on existing and upcoming cyber communication technologies.

Importance:

 

This position was crucial to my professional development because I learned:

 

• Superlative discipline and punctuality, which have helped me achieve tremendously in subsequent objectives

• To accomplish unique tasks by attending numerous classes, for example I was sent to attend classes to learn to manage machines running in a Microsoft networking environment, to configure Linux-based firewalls, and Cisco routers and switches.

• To function as part of a team working towards the same goals, but with entirely different responsibilities.

• To keep pursuing formal education outside of work to enhance my knowledge for both my position in the Air Force as well as my personal life.

Impact:

 

Besides training me to be continuously competent with technology, this experience has conditioned me to grow a high degree of self discipline and to meticulously set and accomplish goals. I learned much about health care, fitness, economic planning, the pursuit of education goals, and social skills necessary to live an emotionally healthy life. This experience has also provided me with the means to pursue higher education by financing my educational pursuits.
